Traveling whenever you want is one of the many perks of traveling in retirement. Not being constrained by how many days you can afford to take off is a liberating experience that allows seniors to travel 24 days a year, 7 days a week! Many seniors decide to travel in the autumn when the prices drop along with the temperature. Traveling during autumn can be just as breathtaking as traveling during peak travel times… for a quarter of the cost.

Sometimes it’s good to embrace the cooler autumn weather and participate in a senior vacation that takes you out of your comfort zone and throws you into a trek up red and gold mountains, picturesque adventures seen only in movies. If that sounds a bit more adventurous than you have planned for you autumn senior vacation, fear not. There are plenty of warmer and/or calmer areas that offer amazing autumn senior vacations.

We’ve found the perfect senior vacation spots that cater to every winter wonderland.

Yellowstone National Park

Big Sky Resort in Montana is considered the base camp of Yellowstone National Park. Whether you go in autumn or later in the season as the mountains become snow-capped, you will be blown away by the natural beauty of the resort and the surrounding National Park. If walking isn’t your cup of tea, taking one of their snow coach or snowmobile tours is a must. Even if you go earlier in autumn, don’t be surprised to see snow on the ground.

A resort would not be a resort in the Rockies if they didn’t offer skiing and snowboarding. Big Sky is no exception, so for the more active seniors or the more reserved, Yellowstone can offer it all.

Alaskan Cruise

Very few vacations can actually live up the hype and expectation people have before embarking on a vacation. However, combining the magnificent scenery, awesome encounters with wildlife and leisurely pace these cruises have really does create a perfect senior vacation that exceeds all expectations.

Autumn is a great time to go on this cruising adventure because it is still not too cold. You have the chance to see the wildlife that many miss during the summer months because the weather is too hot for them. Also included in an Alaskan cruise are the amenities aboard every cruise ship, including shopping, shows and exquisite food.

Canadian Rockies

Taking a train through the Canadian Rockies not only takes away the stress of driving, but also shows you areas of Canada not usually seen by car. The Rocky Mountaineer train trips goes between Calgary and Vancouver, two cities that in themselves are beautiful tourist attractions that offer adventurous sports and calming city activities. The Journey through the Clouds attraction goes through Vancouver and Jasper National Park. The cheaper rates for these train trips are actually in autumn, specifically in late September, early October.

These relaxing quests in the mountains go through the famous Spiral Tunnels and goes by the spot where the last spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven. Your breath will be swept away as you pass over the Continental Divide. You also have the options of touring Jasper, taking a tour along the Icefields Parkway, walking around Lake Louise or taking a helicopter flight over the scenic Canadian wilderness.

New England

New England is composed of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. For seniors and boomers who would rather not drive but wish to sit back and take in the sights from the windows of a deluxe bus or train, there are options ranging from one-day trips out of Boston to multiday trips that bring tourists to Maine and the Canadian Maritime provinces.

Autumn is the perfect time to take these senior trips. The more humid states of New England have cooled off, and the trees look like red and gold lollipops, sticking out of the ground reaching for the sun. There are bus tours covering Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Maine and even New York City.

Aspen, Colorado

Skiing, magnificent mountains, outdoor adventure, healthy living, delicious dining, and music festivals. If that sounds like the perfect senior vacation, then Aspen is where you need to travel to this autumn or winter. Although better known for their winter vacations, Aspen can offer seniors countless attractions in autumn as well.
